I was playing at the West End Farmers Market in Hartford when Carlos Hernandez Chavez, a friend and former band-mate in Tierra Mestiza, dropped by to play some blues, bluegrass and rancheras.

Thomas Hart Benton, one of America's greatest artists, painted the work at left, "Pop and the Boys," which features a lap-style guitar player. Though it has a Depression-era tone, it was actually painted in 1963. The New Britain (Conn.) Museum of American Art has an extensive Benton collection.
